How Units Work

Each program within the Boy Scouts of America has their own terminology and structure. As a new parent or Scout this terminology can be very daunting but it doesn’t have to be scary

Cub Scouts

Cub Scouts include youth, both boys and girls, in Kindergarten through 5th grade.

Each grade/age is divided into a Den.

Dens are either all boy or all girl.
The Den meets two or three time a month.
One Den meeting is normally a “go see it” adventure.
The Den has a Den Leader, however planning is often shared with the parents.

The Pack is comprised of all the Dens within the unit.

The Pack normally meets once per month.
The Pack meetings are run by the Cubmaster.
Meetings may have a special theme.

Scouts BSA

Scouts BSA is a year-round program for boys and girls in fifth grade through high school.

The program provides fun, adventure, challenges, responsibility, and learning as these youth work to become the best versions of themselves.

Scouts BSA Troops are either all-girls Troops or all-boy Troops.

Each Troop consists of Patrols.
Each Patrol typically has 7 to 12 Scouts.
Patrols are led by a Patrol Leader, which is elected by the Patrol.
Troops meet weekly
At least one weekend a month involves an outing such as camping or backpacking

Scouts BSA does have adult leaders in the form of a Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster, however Troops are Scout led.

A Senior Patrol Leader, elected by the Troop, work with his Patrol Leader Council to set the schedule for the Troop, plan outings, and plan meetings.

The Patrol Leader Council is comprised of the Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, the Patrol Leaders, and oftentimes a Troop Guide and Scribe.

The adult leaders within a Troop provide counseling and guidance while allowing the Scouts to accept more responsibility and leadership.
