Winter Skills Adventure Program 2024

Our Annual Winter Skills Adventure Program has been a hallmark event for over 50 years.  There is just something about the snow that makes this adventure extra special.

Getting There

Scouts had to leave home early in the morning to arrive just after sunrise.  We then trekked up a steep trail covered in 5 feet of snow.  Those with specially made Scandinavian sleds call Pulks had an easier go at it, but is was still quite a journey to get to our campsites.

Stay Clear of Wildlife

We were told to stay clear of wildlife, but one staffer decided to get a little too close.

Building Snow Structures

After stomping out the ground, we cut enough blocks for our roof and other snow structures.

Winter Fire Class

A Winter Fire Class was given by one of our Scout Staffers.  Scouts where shown 3 ways to build a fire on snow.  One method used a pop up fire platform, a second used a log raft and the third was a Swedish Torch, which proved to be challenging to light in heavy winds.

A small fire was used to help with the ambiance of the Scout’s Own Service.

The fire was popular at 9am in the morning.

Sunday Events

Following the Scout’s Own Service, Sunday Events included a Snowshoe Hike and training in the Avalanche Pits.

One group went on a snowshoe hike while other group worked in the Avalanche Pits.
Once finished, they switched.

Igloos

Some of our Staffers and Participants decided to build and sleep in Igloos.  These structures takes a bit more effort and skill than the A-Frames used by most of our participants.  These were nice and roomy on the inside, especially when hanging out with company.

Tents

Tent sites require a little more preparation work in the winter.  Snow needs to be compacted and ideally walls are erected to protect against harsh winter winds.  Special stakes and techniques are used to anchor tents.

The Cracker Barrel

Scouts were invited to enjoy snacks and warm drink at the Cracker Barrel as enouncements were shared and awards presented to Scout Staffers.

The Cracker Barrel is a nice way to fill your belly and warm up before bed.
